Hair Color Levels | Ponytres

What is hair level?

Whether it's the full neon green Billie Eilish style or the Avril Lavigne from the 2000's style red highlights, whatever your poison maybe you'll have to first lighten your hair for it to show up vibrantly. There are various levels of lightened hair depending on the desired saturation of color you want. We'll take you through them all so you can speak hair as fluently as we do!

Hair levels are numbers to identify the shade of your hair. The levels vary from 1-12 with 1 being the darkest and 12 being the lightest. (We welcome all levels, it's a no competition and no judgement zone out here!)

These numbers will help you determine how much lightening your hair needs for a successful hair color experiment.

PonyTres Semi Permanent hair dyes work well on pre-lightened hair. The lighter the hair the more vibrant the color would show, so for example Daenerys’ natural hair could totally rock a hot pink without any lightening. PonyTres Semi Permanent hair dyes easily show on hair of level 6 and above.

Plum’tastic – Level 6 and up

Plum’tastic is a pink based deep purple dye that easily shows on hair of level 6 and above.

Plum’tastic would leave a purple tint on level 6 hair which would be visible beautifully under direct sunlight.

Any level lighter than that would make the shade look more vibrant.

True Blue – Level 6 and up

True Blue is a deep blue that will show as a blue tint on level 6 hair which would show under direct sunlight.

Any level lighter than that would make the shade look more vibrant.

Miami Pink - Level 6 and up

Miami Pink is vibrant hot pink that leaves a reddish tint on level 6 hair. (For all the first-timers dipping their feet in the DIY world of hair colors this is a good place to start)

Any level lighter than that would make the shade look more vibrant.

Jack Yellow – Level 8 and above

Jack Yellow is a vibrant yellow that looks as bright as the sun under direct sunlight.

On level 8, it would leave a yellow tint leaving the hair looking goldenish medium blond.

Any level lighter than that would make the shade look more vibrant.

Blood Red – Level 6 and above

Blood red is beautiful fiery red that leaves a burgundy tint on level 6 hair which shines red under direct sunlight.

Any level lighter than that would make the shade look more vibrant.

We hope this helped you understand hair levels and their importance. For easier understanding, all our hair colors come with a basic hair level chart to show you the amount of lightening needed for a particular vibrancy of the shade to be achieved. Here at PonyTres we welcome all shades and would love for you to #ThrowShadeOurWay!

FAQs

How can I lighten hair without damaging it?

For hair that’s in good condition, bleaching it with a good quality bleach and developer and conditioning it thereafter should do the job without damaging your hair.

Can I lighten my hair a few levels down without bleaching it?

Changing the colour of your hair from a dark shade to a lighter one requires bleaching. For lightening, some type of bleaching is required (the volume of the developer depends on the starting shade of the hair and the desired output).
